Our Planet

Hi Guys,

I am starting a new project and will likely be needing some input from the field, the ambitious projects always do. I'm building a 7.5% scale Proton D with hopes to fly at the Winter Nationals in Fla in Feb.

I'm using 12" sona tube and it will be about 14' tall. I'm putting a 6" motor mount in the main and 54mm mounts in the 6 - 4.5" diameter strap-on boosters. On the Proton, the boosters do not detach in flight like the Delta II does. I'll adapt down to a 4" main (98mm) for flights here on the East with lower waivers. It will likely weigh at least 150 lbs, possibly much more depending on build design. I do want to keep it light enough to fly on readily available commercial 98mm motors. An AMW M1900BB and 6 K's might look nice! :)

Pics will be on my site at smashrocketry.com as I progress. I have the sona tubes, plywood, fiberglass and epoxy and hope to get started glassing this weekend.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, how's the project coming?

Hey D-
Slowly .. if at all. I got real distracted with other things and haven't done much. Jorge Blance did cut all my rings and bulkheads and I have the tubes, glass, and epoxy .. just need to do some glassing. It'll be summer before I finish I'm sure.

I've been hiking a lot training for my trip to Denali (Alaska) in June. I'm taking a Denali Prep course on the Big Mountain and hope to fully climb it in June of '09. That's a Real Big Deal! ... to me at least.

Though if I keep reading the TRA forum I may just give it up all together. What a total waste of breath!!! If I was new to rocketry and came across that site, I can assure you I would not continue with rocketry. I get almost ill reading that pompous arrogant nonsense. Sheesh!! :)

Thanks for asking though!! :)

Steve

I think most of us would agree Denali is a big deal. I admire your fortitude and determination. Be careful, we want to see the Proton.
