Our Planet

The other day i picked up two kits from the local hobby store. I got an estes bullpup and a big daddy.

As usual, i lay out all of the parts and inspect the whole kit. While i enjoy estes models, something doesnt set right with me. Whats with the rubber band shock cord? Back when i was last in it, they used the elastic band material and i was fine with that.

Things sure have changed though. Laser cut fins, pre done 'chutes and nicer packaging. Not that im complaining about it at least, lol.

Anyway, the pup went together pretty quick and now its waiting for some paint, which i need to buy tonight. I plan on sticking to the stock model (odd for me) so it will get a nice grey color and i'll use the decals. The big daddy is what had me thinking twice. Again, they opted for the rubber band cord (granted its 1/4 width) to be fitted to the front CR. I was applying fillets to the fins today and it hit me. I should of just went with some TN... Grrr, call it builders remorse. Well, it looks like its going to be flow stock i guess. Depending on how well it does, i might opt for some Aerotech 24mm motors... hmmmm

Pics coming later!

Nathan, I have a suggestion. Go to Pratt Hobbies website, and buy some kevlar thread to replace the shock cord. Use say 4 or 5 feet, and it should be good.

Man, I hear you Nathan....is there a kit out there that I don't modify or wish it had something other than what it came with? Actually, yes, the QModeling kits and the Giant Leap kits that I have had i've put togehter just as they say with all of the supplied parts! I look at Estes kits as parts bags - I steal pieces from them for my scratch builds!

All I can say for your rubber band is LOTS of recovery wadding! I did build some kits last year with my girlfriend that we used the rubber band - and had several burnt failures! I gotta admit that I do like the pre done chutes - but when they don't stay attached to the rocket, they ain't worth much!

Can't wait to see your pics!
Mitch
