This past weekend I successfully certified Level 3 using an AMW M1350WW which reached an altitude of 6751 feet. Perfect flight. Perfect recovery. Awesome. It couldn't have gone better. Breezy conditions prompted me to downsize the main chute to a Large SkyAngle and it was a perfect choice. Post flight inspection showed barely a scratch! Dis-assembling of the electronics bay revealed one of the altimeters failed to ignite it's apogee ematch. Fortunately, the backup altimeter fired, popped the dro…

I recently bought a cheap ($20.00) table saw. It's a 9" Craftsman direct drive that has not been tenderly babied. The stand is flimsy the miter guide is missing, the blade is old. The plastic handle broke off on one of the adjustment handles...
But it works to some degree. The fence is a joke - loosen too much and it comes apart and you have to reassemble it. The motor can't handle even slight pressure from a misaligned cut before it binds and stops. The table is a joke...
I like cheap tools.…

We had another successful High Cotton Launch here in Louisiana. The weather was perfect. The field was perfect and the rockets were hung high. With a 14,000' waiver and perfect visability we were able to air things out. Here is a list of my flights.

[[PROJECT PANDORA]]
So Chris Rich and I have been throwing emails back and forth regarding an ambitious project we are starting throw together. Well, I suppose this isn't much of a seat-of-the-pants venture but more of a test of one's engineering skills and such....
So if you're not aware (and I'm not exactly sure why you would be aware since this is my first post on here...), I've been designing and building an experimental full-size M motor. Okay, okay, so it isn't just any M motor. It is an…

At the July 2008 NEFAR launch, my 4" THOR came in ballistic. Jimmy Yawn
posted a video here-

This was particularly troublesome for me, due to my
G3 episode the month before. I made sure to prep the THOR at home the night before, double checki…

I got my level 1 cert this weekend at Michigan international speedway with the Jackson model rocketry club. The winds were out of the SE at about 5 to 8 mph at around 10:30 am .There was a period of dead calm at around 11:45 when I launched my scratch built "Big Orange" on a Cesaroni H143ss. I estimate the altitude at about 1900 to 2100 ft. it landed about 800 yards away. It had a 1/4 in. zipper upon recovery other than that everything was fine. I put some CA on it and launched again.( added 2 s…

I finally got brave enough to stick one of my ex KNSU motors into a rocket today. I havent done anything with delay charges for ejection, so I had to mod my PML Explorer ("Phantom" - the rocket in my profile picture) to use a MAWD for deployment. Took about an hour or two for everything.
Motor:
case: Loki 38-240
diameter: 1.125"
length: 4.5"
core: 0.375"
nozzle: 0.25"
propellant mass: 109g
density: 27.414g/1n^3 or 0.0615 lb/in^3…

Well Saturday i got to launch my Big Daddy and then my Bullpup that i just finished.
First up was the Big Daddy on a d12-5. Wind was low so i figured it would be a good launch. Flight was good but i noticed it was dropping kinda fast coming down. After it landed i noticed 3 lines just ripped off of the chute. So much for estes chutes...
Then i loaded up the bulpup. On a c6-5 she had a nice and fast flight. Chute opened up and started coming back down. However, half way down, a chute line snapp…

The other day i picked up two kits from the local hobby store. I got an estes bullpup and a big daddy.
As usual, i lay out all of the parts and inspect the whole kit. While i enjoy estes models, something doesnt set right with me. Whats with the rubber band shock cord? Back when i was last in it, they used the elastic band material and i was fine with that.
Things sure have changed though. Laser cut fins, pre done 'chutes and nicer packaging. Not that im complaining about it at least, lol.
An…

As many of you may know, I went for my Level 2 certification this past Saturday. The weather was OK. It could have been better, as it was overcast most of the day. The sun just happened to peek through for my flight.
I got to the field and immediately took the I-ROC out. Since I extended the I-ROC for this flight, I renamed it I-ROC EXT. I started prepping the rocket for it's flight. While waiting for my J350 to show up, I prepped the drogue chute, the main chute, altimeter, as well as the ejec…

Paul Robinson of Animal Motor Works stopped by our area and attended our local club's monthly launch. He brought with him a large trailer packed with AMW cases, reloads, and accessories. After perusing the “Zoo” to familiarize myself with AMW’s products, Paul made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. I ended up with a nice set of the AMW Pro-X 38mm cases covering the 2 – 5 grain reloads. There is also a 1 grain case and a 6 grain case in the 38mm size which I may be adding later.…

When I got into rocketry at the age of around 8 years old , I thought i was building the biggest rocket in the world. The whole rocket was about 5 inches tall, had 3 fins , body tube, and nosecone , and 2 inch long streamer. Now I look back on that day and think , what the heck has happened ? Who would ever think there would be rockets so big, at launches that they had to be viewed around a half or so mile away at when the launch button was pushed. Now there are rockets that are so big it takes…

After working on my L3 (slowly, I might add) I have come quite a ways. I have the airframe glassed and the fin can 90% done. Right now I am working on a design for the electronics bay.
Check it out...

Two weeks from tomorrow, I will be going for my Level 2 certification. This will take place in Pine Island, NY, the home of NERRF. CATO decided to move our monthly launch down there in support of the few of us that are certifying. Gary T. is going for his Level 3 with his Mad Dog 6 on a M1900 Blue Baboon. I will be flying my extended LOC I-ROC on a J350. George K. is going for his Level 2. I also believe there is another level 3 certification and there will be a Level 1 as well.
I extended my I…

Usually a lot of info is published and people are talking and buzzing about their projects. I'm not hearing squat this year. Rumor has it there is a night launch - and I have seen a duty roster with the timeslot for RSO and LCO so I suspect it's real.
Just grumbling!
