Who is this guy anyway?

I have been flying rockets off-and-on since the mid-to-late-sixties; I'm a child of the space race. During my (then 9-year-old) son's 2004 spring break I reentered the hobby in a big way by introducing him to the fun of an Estes RTF MaxTrax. That kicked off a wild spending spree and a sudden influx of completed (and in-progress) kits overflowing the TV room.

That year, the family and I also attended NARAM-46 near Washington DC. I used the proximity to DC as a 'family vacation' hook and the wife bought it. :) Imagine my surprise when the Shrox X15B that I launched during that trip made the front cover of the NAR Guidebook! My 15 minutes of fame!

Since then, I've achieved NAR level 2 certification and become president of the Orlando NAR Section (ROCK).
Just another way of 'paying forward'!

Besides ROCK, I also fly regularly with NEFAR, TTRA and unfortunately not so often with SRA.

WAC Crayon flight at TTRA July 2010

I flew the WAC Crayon again at the TTRA July 2010 launch. The Tiny Tim booster was great on an H128W- very stable and straight up

The PerfectFlight miniTimer fired the Magnelite ML-24 as programmed 1.5 seconds after liftoff.

The G64W ignited separating the Crayon from the booster with a nice flame and white smoke trail, then… Continue

Done with A23 batteries

I think I'm done with the 12 Volt A23 batteries! They just don't seem to be able
to withstand the hot Florida temperatures.

At the July NEFAR launch, I flew my up scale Maxtermind on a SkyRipper I147
hybrid. I had the proper beeps at powerup, but when I recovered the rocket I
noticed one of the drogue charges didn't fire. The Raven was also not responding
later on the flight line. At home, I discovered the A23 b… Continue

American THOR flew! (finally)

UPDATE! Launch photos below.

Finally! After a lengthy rebuild process and several interrupted attempts, my
American THOR made it into the sky at the July TTRA launch.

The motor was a SkyRipper J337, electronics MissleWorks RRC2-mini (primary)
and Featherweight Parrot V2.1 (backup). A small red TopFlight provided drogue
duty and a 72" red/white/blue Spherachute deployed at 500 feet.

The RRC2… Continue

I felt for you Saturday when your G3 came in ballistic. I've had that happen (switch failure) and it sucks. It's always tough to determine what actually went wrong since the crushing impact compromises the pre-flight condition; it's often a guessing game. Just learn and then fly again.

Brian: I sent a couple of folks your way yesterday, Lawrence Jenkins and his son want to get back into rocketry, and live in Orlando. I gave them the ROCK address, so you might be hearing from them!

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, my nephew is a rocket freak and lives in O-town... would it be OK If I brought him to a launch someday soon? I promise I'll behave myself.
