Love at first sight - August 11, 2007:

I am Greg from Panama City, FL. I fly with SEARS. I was on a return trip for work from Norfolk, Va to Panama City, FL via Delta. I had a July 07 Extreme Rocketry to read. I encountered the X-15 Kit Review by Chris Prinzi. His X15 is 6 inches diameter and 6 feet long! This is a distinctive rocket. It is a Hangar 11 Kit. I have been looking for a follow-on project to the Mighty Mo L3 rocket. Looks like I have found it. So as soon as I got home I checked out the web site and contacted Bobby B of Hanger 11. He sent me some pictures including the one below. The picture below is of Chris Prinzi's X-15 built from the Hangar 11 Kit. It did not make the publication date of the review. It is beautiful. I asked Bobby B how to get that finish. He said put a $100 dollar bill in your pocket and take the rocket to a body shop for painting. I like that plan.

So this blog is going to document the my X15 build project. Enjoy!

Ordered the Bird - August 13, 2007:
I ordered the X-15 kit from Bobby B at Hanagr 11 via the phone. He made sure that I was ready for an advanced kit. I convinced him I was ready based on my L3 project. There are no instructions for this type of kit. The decals are $50 extra. I will be getting them later.

I checked on the order and got the Rocksim file - August 24, 2007

I emailed Bobby B at Hanger 11. He replied that the kit is on the way in two boxes. He said he had the rocksim file on his web site. You have to go through the checkout process to get it. It would not open in Rocksim version 8. I processed it through Version 7. It had some corruption but I think is is cleaned up now. Here is an export from Rocksim.

The first box arrives - August 29, 2007

The first box has nose cone, tail cone, nacelles, rudders, wings, centering rings. I am expecting the second box with motor tube and pre slotted body tube today. It all looks good!

This is one in a series of blogs about the X15 kit I am building.

I found this in a NASA report.

I've been looking to fly my Smokin Rockets prototype. Good luck!

Hey Greg! I saw that article also and had the same reaction- "I gotta get me one of those!" Then I read Chris was inspired by what I suspect was my Shrox X15 on the NAR guidebook cover. Now I really need to get one. :)

I see you posted a NASA drawing. I found this one online a few years ago. Hope it helps!

Brian,

I love that X15 on the cover. Gee it would be nice to have a family of X15s. Also thanks for the drawing. I was looking for a drawing like that one. I hope to learn more about the real bird during this project.

Mods to the X15 Kit - September 2 2007

My tenative plans are to use dual deploy using a Defy Gravity tether. It will be my first experience with the tether. The electronics will be in the coupler I am inserting into the nosecone. I may have an altimeter and a timer. So there will be redundancy for the drouge charges. There will be a threaded rod from the tip of the nose to a bulhead at the aft end of the coupler. The aft tip will be embedded in the epoxy/birdshot mixture used for weight. The threaded rod will have an eyebolt on the aft end for the shockcord. There is a four inch tube internal to the nosecome to stiffen it up. I may foam the area between the 4 inch tube and the nosecone. Attached are some views using the rocksim file I got from Hangar 11.

Retention - Sept 3, 2007

I found out that the CR at the end of the tailcone is already drilled for the Aeropack 54mm flang retainer. I'll have to take advantage of that.

Did you ever receive the second box?

Not yet! Bobby B is checking on it. I believe the second box was coming from PML with the body tube slotted.
